WHAT THE HECK IS COWBOY ACTION SHOOTING YOU ASK?
Cowboy Action ShootingTM is a multifaceted shooting sport in which contestants compete with firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West: single action revolvers, lever action rifles, and side by side double barreled, pre-1899 pump, or lever action shotguns. The shooting competition is staged in a unique, characterized, "Old West" style.
Contestants shoot in several one-to four-gun stages (courses of fire) in which they engage reactive steel and cardboard silhouette targets. Scoring is based on accuracy and speed.
The truly unique aspect of Cowboy Action ShootingTM is the requirement placed on authentic period or western screen dress. Each participant is required to adopt a shooting alias appropriate to a character or profession of the late 19th century, or a Hollywood western star, and develop a costume accordingly.
American history buffs and serious shooters alike agree the use of vintage firearms, authentic costuming, unique targets, and fast action make Cowboy Action ShootingTM one of the most interesting of all shooting sports for both spectator and contestant
Ok, so now you know what Cowboy Action Shooting is all about. How many of you had hero's like John Wayne, Randolph
Scott, Roy Rogers, the Lone Ranger, Kit Carson, the Cisco Kid, the list goes on and on. Well, if you're about my age, i'm
sure most if not all of these names are very familiar to you. When you were a kid did you ever strap on a pair of cap guns and pull down your straw cowboy hat and ride off into the sunset on your pony. Of course, that's after you dispatched a slew
of bad guys, saved the pretty school marm and declined the kiss she wanted to give you. Boy have times ever changed.
Well guess what, you can do it again only this time the guns are real and no one will laugh at you when you can't quite get up in the saddle as well as you could when you were 9 yrs. old. Cowboy Action Shooting is one of the fastest growing shooting
sport in the USA and i believe the reason is, that we're all still kids at heart and long for a time when the good guys wore white hats and the bad guys wore black hats. Our lives were much simpler then and maybe we're just trying to recapture those times.
Georgia and i both participate in CAS, in fact she has become a very proficient shooter. We call her the Pistol Packin Mama, and this is a lady who has only started shooting this year.
